Inspiration

Fall is the perfect time to visit an art fair. With booths lining the streets, you can explore a diverse range of artistic expressions, from realistic paintings and abstract works to photography and more. You might even encounter some unique mediums, like encaustic paintings, which is my specialty.

I recently participated in an art fair, and it was such a rewarding experience. While organizing an art fair takes a lot of effort, the benefits are immense. One of the highlights is connecting with fellow artists; we love sharing our experiences and processes. As I wandered through the show, I admired acrylics, oils, illuminated photography, wooden decorative art, and sculptures, engaging with the artists and asking them questions.

When I present my work, I often explain the encaustic medium, which derives its name from the Greek term meaning "to burn in." It’s a wax-based paint made from beeswax, damar resin, and pigment, melted on a hot palette, applied to a wooden board, and heated again to fuse layers. People are always intrigued by both the process and the results.

Make sure you fan those flames.

Other questions that are asked include: Where do you work? Do you teach? and How long did that take you? The question I get asked most often—and one I truly enjoy—is, “What inspires your work?” My paintings form an eclectic collection, each unique, but when I look at them as a whole, a common theme emerges: nature. I love spending time outdoors, especially hiking with my husband and dog, capturing photographs that often inspire my art.

Nature also shapes many aspects of my life. My vacations center around hiking and outdoor adventures, and I cherish sharing this joy with my children and now my grandchildren. I strive to protect our planet so future generations can experience its beauty.

What inspires you today, and where do you think it will lead you?
