The Only Thing Constant is Change
Change is part of both life and art, constantly shaping how we experience the world around us. Change in art often occurs as a response to outside forces and personal experiences. Artists continually push boundaries, experimenting with new mediums, styles, and ideas. You can watch the evolution of an artist, such as Picasso, as their style changes in response to life’s experiences. New movements in art emerge due to change in materials, social change, and changes in the broader world. Just look at the differences in Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and Digital Art.
In life, change is inevitable. We experience shifts in relationships, personal growth, and our everyday experiences that force us to adapt, reflect, and reinvent ourselves. Some of these changes feel great. We get the new job we wanted, fall in love, or welcome a new baby into the family. Other changes can be thrust upon us that we don’t expect and we don’t want. Change can make life feel unpredictable and challenging. Yet, it is the thing that keeps life exciting and full of possibility. If nothing ever changed, life would become static and boring. So we take the good change with the bad.
I have experienced many changes in the last year, both good and bad. I either have to adapt, or spend my time fighting the inevitable. I have found that due to the limitations of time, I was not getting into the studio enough to do what I love - Paint. I have been stretched thin with family, painting, and teaching. Something had to give, so I made the difficult decision to stop teaching art journaling and focus my attention on what I love most - painting with encaustic and mixed media. I’m grateful I was able to teach as long as I did, but I’m looking forward to spending more time in my studio.
