My Art Journaling Journey

I am a retired elementary school teacher.  Throughout my life, art and creativity have been important to me.  I have been an avid observer, going to museums, and a sometimes creator making beaded jewelry.  It wasn't until I turned 60 that I picked up a paint brush.  As I was thinking about retirement (at that time still a few years away), I was longing for an artistic practice and I didn't know where or how to start.

I began reading about different practices and I came across an article by a woman who spoke about her art journaling in a way that I found appealing.  In addition to the ability to try everything, no one ever had to see my work unless I wanted them to.  My journals were mine and I could put them on my shelf if that was my choice.  This was a very freeing thought.  It allowed me to try different things without the worry of judgement.

Today I have stepped out of my journal, working with encaustic paints and mixed media, but I return to my roots of art journaling often.  It is still a great place to explore and have fun.
